Dear Nell, we were out past the Dogger Bank when the wind went round to the north and stayed there, so the skipper has counted us home at twenty days, and I have believed him for once. Every morning I scratch the number on the galley hatch with a nail, and every morning Davey Pryce tells me I have the figures backwards, which is fair, as he can't read his own name on a cod ticket.

Yesterday the net came up with a sack of sprats tangled in a blue glove, and I kept it, because it was the same blue as your Sunday scarf. I have folded it into my oilskin pocket. It smells of diesel and the salt that gets into everything, but underneath it still smells a bit of you, which I didn't expect and can't explain to Davey.

The bit I want to tell you about is the loop. When the sea went flat on Tuesday I sat on the fish bins and drew the number over and over in the condensation on the rail, a big 2 then a big 0, and I found that if I shut one eye and let my hand go slow, the two of them curl together into a heart. I drew it three times before the spray took it. You'll say I'm soft. I am soft, and I've been soft since the pier, so don't pretend otherwise.

Twenty days. I'll be on the quay with my bag on my shoulder, watching the wall for your coat, and when I find it I'll have the heart drawn properly by then, in ink, if the lad in Hull has the nerve. Keep the kettle warm. Love, Tom.
