Infinity heart with script lettering on a foot
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
A close photograph of a tattoo on the top of a bare foot, showing a black infinity symbol with a heart at its upper loop and script lettering running along the curve. The heart is outlined in black with a red fill, while the lettering and infinity line are solid black with smooth, even linework. The subject is centred against a blurred background with toes visible at the top of the frame.

The sign-writer had come up from Ramsgate with a tin of black enamel and a wrist that never stopped moving, and by the third morning Hettie Vane had stopped pretending she wasn't watching him from the scullery window. He was painting a loop on the boarding house gate, a sideways figure eight that he said was the old mark for something without end. Above its top curve he set a small red heart, then began the words along the sweep, script so fine it looked like thread.

'What does it say?' she asked, drying her hands on her apron. 'Love,' he said, not looking up, 'and then the rest, when I've got the room for it.' The brush dipped and rose. Gulls argued over the bins. Hettie thought of the tin trunk under her bed, the letters from Frank that came with Maltese stamps and then stopped coming with any stamps at all, and of the single room at the top of the house she had kept aired for eleven years.
When he finished, the gate looked as if it had always been there, though the paint was still tacky enough to take a thumbprint. He packed his brushes and left the rent on the hall table, folded around a sprig of sea holly. Hettie walked the length of the lettering with her finger, slowly, the way you might trace a road on a map to see whether it joins up. The loop closed at the bottom, neat as a knot.
That evening the gate latch lifted, and a man in a salt-stiff coat stood on the path reading the sign under his breath, his lips moving over the last word. Hettie didn't run. She put the kettle on, the way she always had, and left the front door on the latch, the way she had promised.
