Fine line black script reading forgiven on a wrist, with a raised fist and snowy evergreens behind.

Forgiven script on a wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A raised, clenched hand shows a small word tattoo, written in thin black cursive script, on the wrist. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is greyish black. The hand fills the upper frame against a blurred background of snow-dusted evergreens, with a maroon cuff and denim sleeve below.

The band is still tuning when Eddie Marr crosses the sprung floor of the Assembly Rooms with two glasses of cordial, and you already know he has come to say the thing he has rehearsed since the spring. The hall smells of wet wool and Brylcreem. Someone has hung a paper snowflake from the mirror ball, and it turns slowly over couples who have not yet decided to dance.

He hands you a glass and does not drink his. "I wrote it out," he says, and takes a folded envelope from his inside pocket, then changes his mind and puts it back. "Didn't trust my mouth with it." You remember the summer at Kielder, the boat he borrowed without asking and the splinter of a quarrel that grew over three winters into a silence neither of you could cross. Ruth Calloway had been the reason, or the excuse, and neither of you has said her name since.

You tell him the envelope is the wrong shape for what he needs to say, and he laughs, the old laugh, the one that used to get you both thrown out of chapel. So he takes a pencil stub from behind his ear and writes on the back of a beer mat, pressing hard, one word and nothing else. He slides it across the table and watches your face while you read it.

You don't answer him. You fold the mat small and tuck it under your cuff, where the wool is warm from your arm, and you set your cordial down beside his. The band finds its first slow foxtrot. Eddie holds out his hand as if he has never once been refused, and across the room the snowflake keeps turning.
