A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okafor kept one silver fork for Sundays and told her grandson twice that week not to touch it. On the third evening he took it up to the attic anyway, carrying it like a sword past the landing clock. The tines were bent a little at the outer edge and the handle had gone smooth under her father's thumb. It had only ever been used for spaghetti, and everyone in the house knew that, including the fork.

He sat at the skylight with a plate of supper cooling on his knee and tried to twirl the pasta the way she did, lifting the strands and turning the fork against the plate. The noodles slid off every time. Tomato slid after them, down the handle and over his wrist, and where it fell it stayed dark on the boards. He mopped it with his sleeve, and more came. By midnight a thin red thread had found its way under the door, down the stairs and into the kitchen, where the other forks lay sulking in the drawer.

Mrs Okafor followed the thread in her dressing gown. She found him kneeling on the attic floor with the fork held up like a lamp. She did not scold him. She sat on the edge of the bed, took the fork from his hand, and wound a single mouthful of cold spaghetti in one unhurried turn, the way you might close a letter. Then she held it out to him.

The drips stopped. He never learned why, and she never said, except to remark that a fork only weeps when it is asked to do a thing it was not made for. He ate every strand while she watched. In the morning the floorboards were clean, and the fork was back in its drawer, polished, with nothing on it at all.
