Fortune teller with crystal ball flash

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A woman in a red headscarf, with long dark wavy hair, gold earrings and gold bangles, leans over a glowing crystal ball resting on a purple draped table. The crystal ball has swirling blue and teal tones with white stars, and small outlined stars float around the figure against a peach background. The bold black outlines and flat, cel-shaded colour give it the look of a traditional-style flash sheet design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit yourself down under the lip of the awning, where the drip won't reach you. Rain on the Saturday market at Hallam Cross, every stall shuttered except the one with the purple cloth, and on it the glass ball, turning slow the way a bruise turns. Look at it. There are white stars swimming round the blue in there, like fish that have forgotten they're in a pond.

Now, the boy from the fish stall, Tobias Reeve, was sixteen and certain of everything. He'd heard the old woman at that table charged a shilling for a look, and that she never told the same fortune twice. So he slapped his coin down, bent over the glass and waited for his own face to swim up at him. It didn't. What came up was the market itself, the same stalls and the same rain, only the lamps were lit and a stranger was buying dried herbs from his father's crate.

He went home to tell his mother, and she told him to stop wasting shillings on nonsense. But the next Saturday he came back with his pockets empty and looked again. The swirl had turned the other way. In the middle of it sat a small clean boat with a lantern on its bow, rocking on water that was not in any pond in Hallam.

So mind you don't look too long, lad. The old woman will only ask for your shilling, and the glass will keep the rest. Hear the rain? It's coming on again, and those stars are already moving.
