Four black dragon designs on a flash sheet
Black and grey · Flash
The sheet shows four separate dragon designs arranged on a white background, each with a coiled, swirling body and clawed feet. The linework is solid black with bold, tapering lines and areas of solid fill, including spiky dorsal ridges and curled tails. The image is high contrast and uses no colour, so the designs are easy to see as stencils or templates.

Pull the canvas tighter, Ada, and mind the guy rope, because the wind off the Medway has never once in forty summers asked anybody's permission. Sit yourself on the crate. You want the one about the four dragons pinned to Oswin Vell's board by the wagon steps? Everyone says he drew them for the sailors. He didn't. He drew them for Tobias, the fire-eater's lad, who swore he'd carry something fierce on his arm before he'd swallow another lamp.

Oswin drew them one after another by lantern light. The first curled like a question mark that had lost its nerve. The second had a spine that tapered up into the night like a sail being hauled. The third lowered its head to sniff at the lamp oil, and the fourth let its tail trail down to the sawdust like a rope it meant to climb back up. He used black ink only, no colour, because colour fades and a dragon in black is a dragon in no hurry. Tobias wanted all four. Oswin told him a man can only carry one at a time, and the rest would be waiting.
On the last night of the season the wagons were loaded and the board stood empty. Tobias swore the dragons had walked off the paper while he slept. At first light we found claw marks dragged through the sawdust toward the river, and along the bank four smoking coils pressed into the mud, one of them still warm. Tobias was out on the shingle blowing fire at the moon, and he wasn't scarred for it, not a mark on him.
Look at the sheet now, if you like. Oswin's name at the bottom is smudged where a tail once curled over it. Put a penny in the tin on your way out, and mind the fourth one. He still bites.
