Old Tomasz the baker had kept his ovens lit for forty years, and every morning before the bells of St Brannoc's he raked the embers and waited for the bread to tell him it was ready. This morning the loaves came out pale. The dough had risen wrong, sagging at the edges like wet washing, and Mabel Rudd, who swept the step, said the river had been restless all night.

The river ran under Fell Lane, black and quick, and folk said a dragon slept beneath the weir and that its breath rose as mist off the water. Tomasz had never believed it. But when he went to the back door with the sack of rye, the mist was there, curling up the cobbles in long, slow scrolls, and it smelled of hot iron and cloves.

Out of the mist came a head with a horn like a bent needle and a mouth open wide enough to swallow a cart. It did not roar. It looked at the rye, then at the oven, and then it made a small polite sound, the sort a hungry thing makes. Tomasz understood. He had once promised the river a loaf each new year, and had forgotten, as men do.

He shaped a round loaf, scored it with three cuts like a crown, and slid it into the oven's heart. The dragon's tail rose from the water and folded itself around the warm stone, wave after wave, until the whole lane smelled of crust. When the bells rang, the river was flat and grey, and on the step lay one bread, still ticking as it cooled, scored like a wave.
