The wind had been at the seedheads since Tuesday, and Mabel Orrin had given up on keeping count. Her grandfather used to say a dandelion clock told the hour only to people who had never waited for anything. The first had been the old queen's, or so the village said. Its spokes were fine as hair and tipped with black beads, and when the breeze came from the west it lost a dozen at once, and they drifted down over the brook like a parish of small stars going home. The second was bolder and curled at the rim, as if it had been brushed by a hand that wanted to be remembered. The third was feathered and fierce, and the fourth had already given up half its seeds to the hedgerow and looked, to Mabel, rather pleased about it.

She opened the bag and took out the bread her sister had sent up with the carter. Beyond the brook a figure in a grey coat was coming up the path, slowly, leaning on something that might once have been a sword. Mabel did not wave. She blew, very gently, on the nearest clock, and watched a hundred seeds lift and scatter towards the water, each one carrying a question she did not intend to answer until the wind had made up its mind.
