Small black fine line tattoo of an elephant with its trunk raised, placed on the lower leg above the ankle.

Small elephant with raised trunk on the ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small elephant facing right, with its trunk lifted and tusks visible, is drawn in black ink. The body is built from fine crosshatched lines that suggest shading and texture, with simple outlines for the legs, ears and tail. The tattoo sits alone on pale skin against a dark background, with a plain light wall behind.

Dear Mags,

The elephant came out of the trees on Tuesday, just as the mill bell was going, and it stood at the edge of the top field with its trunk up as if it were reading the weather. Nobody in Hollin's End has seen one before, though Old Pell swears his father saw one in a travelling show in Lancaster. Mrs Ashby carried out a pail of windfalls and set it on the stile, and the beast came over slow as a tide and took them one by one, careful with its tusks, as if someone had taught it manners.

I went up with the lantern on Wednesday to see whether it had a keeper. There was no keeper, only a rope burn on one foreleg and a trail of crushed bracken running back into the beeches, where the light goes thin and green. I followed it as far as the old charcoal pit before my nerve gave out. When I turned round, the animal had lifted its trunk towards the village and was simply watching me, the way you'd watch a neighbour decide whether to knock.

Last night the wind came round from the west and the whole valley smelt of rain. This morning the field was empty except for a neat line of prints pressed into the mud, heading uphill towards the forest and the old road nobody uses now. I have been leaving the gate open and a sack of apples on the post. I have not told the constable.

Write back soon and tell me the city has not swallowed you whole. I keep thinking that whatever is out there knows the way home better than we do.

Yours, Tom
