Four fox flash designs with banners

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A flash sheet of four separate fox designs, each with a lettered banner and a cluster of flowers such as chrysanthemums, peonies and hibiscus. The foxes are drawn in bold black outlines with simple flat fills and soft shading, and they vary in pose from lying down to sitting and standing. The palette is bright, with orange, pink, purple, yellow and cream dominating against a plain white background.

Mrs Hollis had been trying to get a word out of the fox since April, and she was not going to be beaten by a banner. Ada had painted the letters herself, she told the postman, because the fox seemed to like things spelled out.

Nobody had ever seen the fox do anything but sleep. Ada left a saucer of milk by the gate on Thursdays and a sponge cake on Sundays, and each time the saucer came back empty and the cake sat untouched, its icing picked clean of hundreds and thousands by some patient tongue. She took this as conversation.

On the third Sunday of October, Ada found a new sign propped against the rhubarb. It said DON'T TALK TO ME, and beside it, laid out neatly on the path, were three peonies she had been saving for the village show. She laughed until she had to sit down on her upturned bucket.

The next week the fox was gone, and so were the chrysanthemums, every last one. Ada found a fresh banner pinned to her shed door. PLEASE LEAVE, it said. She read it twice, then poured the milk down the sink, feeling oddly bereft, and took the sponge cake to the church fete instead.
