Howling wolf within a circle

Realism · Black and grey · Flash

A wolf's head is shown in profile, jaws open and muzzle raised as if howling. The fur is rendered with fine, directional pen strokes and shading that build up texture around the neck and chest. A thin unbroken circle surrounds the upper part of the head, and the background is plain off-white.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The wolf came down to the Kellen Gap every night after the last mule train had passed, and it sat on the wall stone with its jaw lifted to the moon. Old Tomas, who kept the customs hut on the eastern side, said it had started the spring the frontier posts were moved a half-mile north. The clerks on both sides disliked that story, so nobody told it twice.

Ilse, the young clerk sent up from the valley town, wanted to know why it howled. Tomas said there had been a she-wolf on the far slope with a white blaze across her shoulder, and when the snows closed the pass that autumn, the two of them had been split by a line drawn on a map in a warm office. He had no paper for wolves. He said the line had never once been read aloud to the wind, and the wind did not seem to mind.

On the first hard frost the howl came back from the western ridge, thin and certain, and the wolf on the wall answered it. Tomas took the lantern and climbed as far as the stone. In the snow there were two sets of tracks meeting at the boundary post, then one set going back over the crest, unhurried, as if whoever made them had been expected. In the morning he opened the ledger, found the column marked Crossings, and wrote a single line in his square hand: one wolf, no goods to declare, going home.
