Four heart designs with beauty products

Traditional · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows four heart-shaped flash designs drawn in black outline. The motifs include lipsticks, a bottle of nail varnish, a compact mirror with a bow, and a banner reading GLAMOROUS with a flower above it. The designs use bold, even linework with dotted and scalloped borders, and they are arranged in a neat four-panel grid on a plain background.

Ruby Glow was the only thing Mrs Hadfield ever asked for by name, and in March of 1961 the wholesaler wrote to say it had been discontinued. I told her across the counter at Pemberton's on Chapel Street, and she thanked me, then came back every Friday for a month to ask again, as if I might have missed it the first time.

Mr Pemberton was no help. He said a chemist's was for stock that moved, and he had a shelf of hair tonic that hadn't moved since the Coronation. But on the last Friday of April, when he had gone for his dinner, I went into the back and pulled down the boxes marked for the bin. Under a tray of cough sweets, wrapped in a tea towel that smelled of Dettol, was one bottle, the glass cloudy, the cap still sealed with its paper tab.

I carried it out in my palm like something hatched. Mrs Hadfield was already at the door with her gloves in one hand and her purse in the other. She didn't speak when she saw it. She sat on the stool by the window, eased the cap off with a sigh, and painted one thumbnail with the careful strokes of someone signing a will. Then she held her hand up to the light and laughed, a short surprised sound, the way you do when something you've given up on turns out to have been waiting all along.

She paid me a shilling, and I have it still, in the tin where I keep the buttons. I never found the nerve to try the colour myself. It is enough to know that somewhere in Bradford there was one hand done properly that spring.
