A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The lost property office at Harrowgate Junction kept its strays in a wire cage behind the ticket hall, and Mrs Okafor-Hale had a rule that nothing went back out without a proper name on the tag. Dennis, the new lad, thought this was fussy. He had found a pencil drawing of a heart in the third-class waiting room, pinned under a dropped timetable, and wanted to bin it. Mrs Hale took it off him and held it to the lamp. The heart was outlined so finely it looked breathed onto the paper, scalloped petals fanned out behind it like the ruff on a lady's collar, and from its lower point hung beads on dotted chains, each bead shaded with a thumb's worth of graphite.

She turned it over. Someone had written a single letter in the corner, faint as a watermark, and under it a train time: the 16:40 to Scarborough, a service cancelled since the spring. Mrs Hale had worked the ticket counter for thirty-one years and knew the handwriting of nearly every regular who ever bought a return they never used. This was not one of them. It was the hand of a person who drew in the margins while waiting for something that did not come.

She filed it under H and went home. The next morning, on the platform, a man in a grey coat stopped beside her and asked, very politely, whether anything had been handed in that might belong to him. He described the drawing exactly, down to the number of beads. Mrs Hale looked at his shoes, then at the cage, then back at him. "Name?" she said. He hesitated, then gave the letter from the corner. She slid the sketch across the counter and watched him fold it into his breast pocket, carefully, as if it might still be wet.
