Four music notes behind the ear
Other · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows four black musical notes arranged in a descending diagonal line on the skin behind an ear. The two outer notes are beamed pairs of quavers, while the two middle notes are single stems with flags, all drawn with bold, solid black fill. The warm skin tone and soft focus on the hair at the right edge create a close, simple composition.

The last singer on the hill road had no voice left, so she carried the song in her pockets instead. Four pieces of bone, each cut with a small hook, knocked together when she walked. Her granddaughter Orla asked what they were for, and the old woman said they were the tune the river used to sing before the water went quiet.

Each cold season they climbed to the dry reservoir at Carrow Down, where the concrete still held a ring of rust-coloured marks. Somebody long dead had painted those marks to mean loud and soft. Orla learned to read them by tracing with her thumb. Beamed pairs, the old woman said, were two quick breaths joined at the hip, and a single flag was one breath that had to climb to reach the next.
In the spring the bones went missing. Orla found them in the gully below the pump house, lying in a slope as if someone had dropped them in order and they had rolled apart. She picked up the lowest one, warm from the sun, and held it against her ear. Faint and rising, the river was there, as if it had been waiting for someone to ask.
She carried the four bones up the hill and fitted them together the way the marks showed: quick, quick, climbing, slow, then down. At the top she hummed the first breath. Far below, where the water had been gone for a hundred years, something answered with a clatter of stones.
