Treble clef tattoo in black ink
Fine line · Black and grey · Photo
A single black treble clef with two dots beside its centre and a note at the bottom is tattooed on skin. The linework is smooth and fairly thin, with the ink solid and even throughout. The background is out of focus, so the tattoo sits clearly at the centre of a close, shallow-depth-of-field frame.

Dear Tomas,

The fog came in on Tuesday like wet wool and has stayed four days, and the horn has been sounding its one flat note the whole time, so that I have stopped hearing it and only notice when it pauses. Mrs Fenwick from the mainland office sent out a new tuning fork with the relief boat, a brass thing with a bent stem, and asked me to match the signal to a proper G so the boats coming up the Sound can tell us from the buoy. I laughed at her. Forty years a keeper and nobody has ever asked me what note the sea sounds in.
So I have been drawing it. Every evening after the lamp is lit I sit at the table with the ledger and sketch the horn's rise and fall in the margin, a long curl like the top of a clef, and then I go down the stairs to hear it close up. The low note sits right at the bottom of the staff, where a clef would have its dots beside the belly. I have two spare dots in my pencil case, I swear, and I have been tempted to ink them in.
Last night the fog thinned for an hour and a ship answered us, a single short blast from somewhere out past the rocks. I heard it through the glass and thought, that is a fifth above ours, that is a conversation. I put down the pencil and went out on the gallery in my socks.
I am writing because I want you to know the fog is lifting, and because the fork is still in my coat pocket. Come up in the summer. Bring your fiddle. We will see if the horn can be talked into a key.
Yours, Ellis
