Other · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a treble clef and a bass clef joined to form a heart outline, with the bass clef's two dots set to the right. The linework is smooth and solid in black ink with no shading. The photograph is taken in warm daylight on a torso, with the tattoo centred and a thumb holding the skin at the left.

You are the court copyist of Vellandry, the only person in the kingdom who can read the staff without moving your lips. Five lines run across the palace walls like rigging, and each morning the bells in the north tower ring whatever note you chalked on the stone the night before.

The trouble started the autumn the treble clef arrived from the eastern provinces. He was tall and looping, all curl and no ballast, and he sang only in bright phrases that made the cooks drop their ladles. The bass clef had kept the cellars for forty years and rarely left his dark corner of the staff. He pretended not to notice the newcomer. You noticed everything, because that was your job, and you saw the bass clef polish his two dots every evening with a square of grey felt, one and then the other, as if they were lamps he meant to keep lit for someone.
Then came the frost that split the bell-frames. No note could be struck without cracking bronze, and the queen sent for every musician in the realm. Only the two clefs could still sound, because one night they had drifted together and hung their tails across each other, curling into a shape the old clerks called a heart. You carried your inkpot down the palace steps at dawn and copied it onto the frozen flagstones, exactly as it lay.
When the thaw came, the bass clef's dots had gone from the cellars, and the treble clef's curl had settled quietly into the margin beside the bells. The queen asked you to write the matter up for the royal archive. You wrote down only the note the bells had rung that morning, then pressed a small heart beside it with the wrong end of your pen.
