Four sea turtles across the upper back

Back · Black and grey · Photo

Four solid black sea turtles are arranged in a diagonal line across the upper back, each turtle drawn as a simple silhouette. Faint pink-brown swirls curl behind the turtles, giving a soft wave-like effect. The photo is warm-toned and shot close up, with a patterned blue top and a cross pendant necklace visible at the edge of the frame.

Kaimana had counted the honu from the lava shelf every morning since the storm, and every morning there were four. Aunty Leilani said the reef kept them the way a kitchen keeps a pot of rice, always a little more than anyone needs. Kaimana doubted that, but she liked the sound of it, and she liked how the four dark shapes rose together at the edge of the swell, breathed, and slid back under as if the sea had swallowed a secret.

Her father had sold the boat in March. Since then he sat on the porch of the net shed mending nothing, the twine slack in his lap. Kaimana carried his thermos down to the harbour each dawn and came back with fish heads for the cat. She did not tell him about the fourth turtle, the smallest, which lagged behind the others and sometimes turned to look at the shore before following.

On the last Sunday of the month the swell came up grey and fast, and the three larger turtles dived for the channel. The small one stayed, circling the shallows where the water ran pale with sand. Kaimana waded out to her knees, the cold pulling at her shins, and saw that its shell was cracked along one edge, a fresh pale line. She stood still until it drifted close enough to nudge her ankle, then she shouted for her father.

He came down the path faster than she had seen him move in a year. Together they guided the little turtle through the break into deeper water, his hands steady on the rope and hers steady on the shell, until it rose once, blew, and turned toward the channel where the others waited. Her father wiped his face with the back of his wrist. "Four," he said, and that was all. On the walk home, though, he stopped at the boat shed and took down a plank to plane.
