Infinity and heart tattoo on the hip
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A hand with magenta nail polish rests on the hip of a person wearing dark clothing. A thin black outline of an infinity symbol, with a heart forming one of its loops, sits on bare skin at the side of the hip. Warm sunlight falls across the skin in soft stripes, and the photo is tightly cropped on the hand and tattoo.

The bean vine had been put in on the wrong side of the wall, and every spring old Hetty Lunt said so, pointing with her trowel at the gap in the brick where it crept through. Her husband Tom had planted it the year their first daughter was born, a scarlet runner that climbed anything it touched. Nobody in Little Wenning could remember a garden without it.

The trouble came the summer the well dried. Hetty's neighbour, a widower named Abel Crake, wanted the vine cut back so he could run his gutter pipe. He took his shears to the wall one June morning and found the stem had wound itself round his fence post, looped once, then doubled back through the first loop and crossed again, so the whole tangle drew a figure on its side that would not close. At the crossing, a single bud had opened in the shape of a heart.
Abel stood holding the shears for a long time. Then he went home, fetched his own spade, and dug along the wall until he found the root, which ran under both gardens like a line in a ledger that never balanced. He left the cutters on her step. Hetty found them at dusk, and beside them a jar of his plum jam with a note tucked under the lid.
Abel's gutter was never fitted. The vine ran on, crossing the wall every summer, and Hetty said it had only ever wanted to get to the other side. The loop stayed, and so did the heart, and by the end of August the two of them were picking beans from the same stem without either bothering to say whose it was.
