Four vertical barbed wire designs on white

Black and grey · Flash

The image shows four vertical strips of barbed wire drawn in solid black ink on a white background, arranged side by side. Each strip has twisted wire lines with pointed barbs at intervals, and the widths and densities of the barbs differ slightly between strips. The linework is bold and clean with flat black fills and no shading, and the composition fills the frame from top to bottom.

Gavin brought up the fence before the second round had even reached the table, the way he always does when the old year group gets a few pints in. Mr Abney's fence, he called it, though none of us had ever seen Mr Abney do anything but shout across the field at us. It ran along the bottom of the playing fields, four strands of wire twisted tight around the posts, and every barb on it had a name in our heads. We dared each other to cross it. Gavin tore the back of his blazer on it in Year Nine and still said it was worth it for the view of the quarry pond.

The hall smelled of floor polish and fried onions, the same as it did in assemblies. Someone had pinned up photographs from the school trip to Tenby, and I kept finding myself in them, squinting, one hand half raised against the sun. Nobody mentioned the summer the wire came down. Nobody needed to. Mrs Lowe, who taught us geography and had a voice like a tin whistle, stood by the buffet explaining to a man in a brown suit that the field had been sold, that the houses went up in 2004, that you could not even see the posts any more.

Later, when the others had gone to find the minibus, I walked the length of the car park to the edge of the new estate. The old fence line was still there, a rusted stub of post in a flowerbed, and behind it a single length of wire had been wound round the crab apple tree like a bandage nobody had thought to take off. I stood with my hands in my pockets and counted the barbs. Eleven, then a twelfth I had not seen before, half hidden under the bark.
