Geometric feather line drawing
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A single feather is drawn in uniform black linework, with its shaft running vertically down the centre. The quill is divided into overlapping angular triangular and diamond-shaped facets, and the barbs step outward in layered tiers. The drawing is in black ink on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

Aunt Hester never let me cut glass freehand. She said a feather was only honest if every edge had been measured twice, and she drew the first one for me on the back of a delivery note, using a steel rule and a pencil sharpened to a needle. Its shaft ran straight down the middle, and each barb was built from triangles that leaned into one another like people trying to get out of the same door.

The commission came from the Harrowgate Mill Chapel in the spring, a single lancet window with a broken quarrel near the top. The vicar wanted it "as it was", which meant nobody had recorded what it was. I found a feather in the surviving fragments, a fan of grey lead and clear glass, and I spent three weeks sketching the missing tiers from its shape, the way the facets stepped outward and then folded back on themselves.
On the last evening I laid the finished pattern over the old lead and found that my drawing and the original had been off by the same small angle, a degree and a half, every facet, all the way down the shaft. Someone before us had cut to a rule that was no longer true. I left the mistake in place. Aunt Hester would have called that vanity, but I thought the window ought to keep one honest error, the way a feather keeps the mark of the bird it came from.
When the light came through the next morning, the panes threw a thin line of violet across the flagstones, and the vicar stood in it with his hands in his pockets, saying nothing at all.
