Feather and bead necklace design

Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing of a central feather with smaller feathers hanging from its base, strung between two beaded cords. Two curved claw or horn-shaped pendants hang from the cords on either side. Fine ink outlines are shaded with solid black along one side of the feathers and the cords, on a plain white background.

The cord had snapped twice before Mags would let me try again, so by the time we tied off above Hatton Lock the beads were already hanging like wet peas off the cabin roof. She sat on the gunwale with her knees up and told me to stop fussing. A necklace, she said, was only a way of carrying things you'd rather not put down.

The feather was a grey-brown heron quill she'd pulled from the weir, its base bound in waxed thread. Beside it she laid two curved pendants she had filed from a pair of old boat hooks, worn to crescents by years of rope. Each had a brass cap. She threaded them onto the outer cords so they would swing when the barge rocked, and the three small feathers went on last, each knotted at the bottom with its own loop.

The next morning we were heading for Braunston on a river gone high and brown. Mags spent the afternoon lecturing the lock-keeper about his gate paint while I wrestled the cord with cold fingers. When I finally held it up, the light off the water made a shadow run down one side of every feather, dark as ink.

She took it, looked at it for a long time, and then lifted it over my head without a word. "There," she said. "Now you've got something to pull when the weather turns." I wore it through three locks and a squall that took the chimney off the boat behind us. It still smells faintly of tar.
