Fox and stag outline tattoos side by side
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
Two matching single-line outline tattoos sit side by side on pale skin: a fox looking to one side on the left and a stag with tall antlers on the right. The words always and protego are written in thin script beneath each animal, and the linework is black with no shading. The photograph is warm-toned and shows both designs fully in frame against a plain background.

The frost had Fenn's paws aching by the time he reached the orchard wall, and the hens behind the farmhouse were already screaming the alarm. He had no business being there. Every fox in the valley knew the stag kept his antlers low over the lower meadow, and that nothing took a hen while Oda was watching.

Oda was watching. He came down through the bracken without a sound, which was the trick of him, a creature that size who moved like smoke. He did not charge. He stood between the coop and the fox and lowered his head, and the air around him seemed to thicken, the way it did before the old grandmother's shield charm in the church rafters. Protego, she had called it, pressing her palm flat to a slate, and nothing had ever got through while she lived.
"You'll starve before spring," Oda said.
"Then I'll starve," Fenn said, and hated how it came out small.
The stag stepped aside, just a little. Fenn saw the bread wrapped in cloth on the wall, left there by the farmer's boy, and understood that the stag had been feeding the hens' thief all autumn. Dawn came grey and slow, and when they parted at the stile, Oda scratched a single word into the frost with one hoof, the way you sign a letter you mean to keep. Always, it said, and the fox carried that word home all winter like a coal in his mouth.
