Matching fox and stag outline tattoos

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

Two single-line outline tattoos sit side by side. The left shows a fox's head and shoulders with the word always in thin script below, and the right shows a stag with large antlers and the word protego in script beneath. The linework is uniform and black with no shading or colour, and each design is centred on its own limb against a plain, neutral background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The stag had been standing at the edge of Hollin Wood since the first frost, and Mrs Agnes Pardoe, who kept the post office at Ravensgill, said it was waiting for someone to come back down the lane. Nobody believed her. Then the fox arrived, thin as a rake and sharp at the ears, and sat down a yard from the stag as if he had been sent for.

The village gossiped about them for a year. The fox ate from the bins behind the chapel and the stag grazed the churchyard grass, and neither moved when the dogs were loosed. Boys threw stones that fell short. When the beck rose over the footbridge in March, the stag was seen wading the flood with the fox balanced between his antlers, and a lamb held by its scruff from one bank to the other.

Agnes kept a ledger of such things, and she wrote it down. Three weeks later the fox was found under the lych gate, grey at the muzzle, curled against the cold stone. The stag stood over him until the undertaker came, then walked back into Hollin Wood and did not come out again. People said he had gone looking for the fox's den, or that he had simply stopped, the way old things do.

The following spring, Agnes found a scrap of paper pinned under the post office counter in a hand she did not know. It said only always, and beneath that, in another hand, protego. She copied both words into the ledger beside the entry for the flood, and under the date she wrote nothing at all.
