Fox head with roses and pendant design
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A pencil and ink drawing on paper shows a fox head at the centre, with shaded fur and hatched linework on its ears and face. Three roses and several leaves surround the fox, and a beaded oval pendant with a droplet charm hangs below its chin. The bold black outlines and grey shading are set on a plain, slightly textured white background.

You are the first one in the lane at half past four, when the flour is still cold in its sacks and the ovens have only begun to tick. The back door is propped with a brick, the way Mrs Adeyemi likes it, and on the step sits the fox, neat as a parcel, the silver pendant swinging on its chest. It has come every morning since the frost, and every morning you have pretended not to notice that it waits for the first tray of rolls to cool.

Today you break the habit. You lift the tray of bread knots onto the sill, where the steam rises past the window, and you tell it aloud that the rent is due on Friday and there is nothing left to pawn. The fox tilts its head. Its eyes are far too steady for an animal with no business in a bakery at all. Then it stands, steps down onto the flagstones, and lets the beaded charm drop from its chin. The droplet clinks once and rolls toward your boot.
You pick it up. The stone is warm, as if it has been lying in the sun all night, and the little silver drop is engraved with a rose too small to see without squinting. Behind you the first oven door creaks open. When you turn around the step is empty, three sugared buns have gone from the cooling rack, and in their place lies a single white petal.
