Fox head with leaves and triangles

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A detailed drawing of a fox's face, centred and facing forward, with pointed ears and shaded fur. It is surrounded by outlined leaves, small rose-like buds and three triangles with dotted shading that hang beside the face. The linework is fine and the image is drawn in black ink on white paper, with a pen resting at the lower left.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox was back under the awning this morning, Tom, sitting on the crate of damsons as if he had paid for them. Mrs Pryce says he has been coming since the week you left, and that the market dogs will not go near him, which I take as a sign of something, though she will not say what.

It has rained every day since Monday. The stalls sag under their tarpaulins and the gutters run the colour of strong tea down into the drain by the fishmonger. The fox does not mind it. His fur lies flat and dark and his eyes stay fixed on the crowd as if he is reading faces. Mrs Pryce's mother used to draw three triangles on the lids of her preserving jars, the same shape that hangs by his ears on their little cords, and she swore they kept the wet out. I tried it on the lid of the honey pot. The honey is still dry, so perhaps there is something to it.

Yesterday I gave him the heel of a loaf and he took it politely, then dropped a damp blackberry leaf onto my boot, either as payment or as a joke. I have pressed it between the pages of the ledger. When I went to put the shutters up at dusk he was standing in the middle of the lane with the lamplight pooling round his feet. The rain had stopped for once, and every puddle held a small upturned sky.

Come home at Christmas if the boat allows. I will keep the leaf for you, and the fox too, if he is still here. He seems to think the stall is his now. Mind the cold, and write back soon.

Your sister, Ruth
