The fox is back on the old stump below Hatherley Lock, standing up on its hind legs like a man waiting for a bus. I watched it from the roof of the boat this morning with my tea going cold. It looks at the water as if it has been asked a question and is considering the answer. You would laugh. Father always said foxes were nothing but trouble, but I have never seen one that minded its own business so carefully.

The finch has moved into the vine over the towpath gate, the one Mrs Ambrose planted the year before she went to her daughter's in Bristol. Nobody has pruned it since. The grapes are still hard and green, though the finch has been pecking at them as if it knows something we don't. I have started leaving the gate open on purpose so the fox can come and go. Dad would call that soft.

Something happened on Thursday I haven't told anyone. A boy from the marina came up the towpath with a camera and wanted to photograph the fox for a magazine. I told him to go away. He went, grumbling, and the fox never even turned its head. Afterwards I sat on the stump myself, where the moss is worn flat, and tried to stand the way it does. My knees lasted about four seconds.

Come up at Easter if you can. The boat needs a hand with the lock gates, and I think the fox would like to meet you.
