Third night running, the bin lid at the Gallows Col hut was off before I'd got my boots undone. I heard the scrape from my bunk, muttered at the sleet drumming on the roof, and went out with a head torch and the grim certainty that I'd find him sat on the picnic bench like a landlord.

He was there, grey as wet slate, holding an Oreo in both front paws and twisting it apart with the concentration of a watchmaker. Two more biscuits sat lined up beside him like coins he'd already counted. Blueberry from the scrub had stained his muzzle purple, and a bramble leaf was stuck to one ear. He looked up at me with that black mask of his, entirely unbothered, and I realised the packet I'd been rationing for the wardens' supper was empty.

I sat down opposite him and gave a short speech about rules, provisions and the mountain rescue budget. He listened with great courtesy, then ate the chocolate halves one by one and pushed the cream half across the bench towards me. I took it. It seemed the fair thing to do, and the sleet was coming in sideways. We sat there until my flask of tea went lukewarm, neither of us saying anything that mattered.

By morning the bin was weighed down with a stone. On the step outside, three biscuits sat in a neat row, licked clean of cream, with a single blackberry set on top like a receipt.
