Neo-traditional fox head in profile with enoki mushrooms, green leaves and a blue moon, tattooed on a lower leg.

Fox and mushrooms on a calf

Neo-trad · Calf · Colour · Photo

A fox head faces right in profile, its ear and muzzle shaded in orange, grey and white, set against a blue circle that suggests a moon. Clusters of enoki mushrooms and broad green leaves with black outlines fill the lower half, and a dotted circle line sits behind the fox at the top. The colour is bold and the composition is vertical, with the design running the length of the leg.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox came down the pass in the week the snow let go of the larches, and she brought the mushrooms with her in a fold of her coat. Mariana had been watching the bank below the hut for three days, waiting for the enoki to push up through the rotten birch, pale and crowded as a crowd of small heads at a funeral. Old Dorje said you could not hurry them, and you could not leave them either, because by the next moon they would have gone to slime and the wind would have taken what was left.

The fox sat on the stone wall and watched her pick. She did not bark or slink away. When Mariana reached for a cluster near the roots, the animal stood, turned her narrow head to the east where the moon was coming up blue over the ridge, and then looked back at the girl as if to say the choice was hers and the price was the same either way.

Mariana left the largest clump where it grew. She carried the rest down to the village in a basket lined with broad green leaves that she had torn from the gentian by the stream, and she told Dorje that the fox had taken her share first. He laughed until he coughed. That night she dreamed of a moon with a fox's face turned up toward it, and when she woke the bank below the hut was covered in new pale heads, as if the ground had been asked a question and had answered.
