Traditional style tattoo of a red fox riding a black skateboard, with the words TOO WEIRD TO LIVE and TOO RARE TO DIE arcing around it on a limb.

Fox on a skateboard with lettering

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A red fox crouches on top of a black skateboard, its tail curling down at the lower left, with the body drawn in bold black outlines. The words TOO WEIRD TO LIVE and TOO RARE TO DIE follow a curved path around the fox in clean black capitals. The fox is filled with red and orange shading on a light skin background, and the photograph is taken straight on with soft, even lighting.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The fox turned up on the towpath the spring my father sold the boat, and by May it was riding a skateboard along the cut as if it had paid the toll. Nobody knew where the board came from. Mrs Okafor from the lock cottage swore it had been nicked from the lads outside the leisure centre, but the lads swore it had been nicked from them, so we agreed it was the fox's now.

It rode low, belly close to the deck, tail streaming out behind like a flag nobody had bothered to fold. On the flat stretch past the old gasworks it would drop its head, crouch, and shoot off with the wheels hissing on the wet tarmac. Dad said a fox that clever would be dead by summer. I said he'd said the same about me, and he laughed so hard he had to sit down on the coal bunker.

The day the council men came to clear the bank, the fox was gone, and so was the board. We walked the whole length to the aqueduct calling it names nobody would use on a dog. Then we heard a rumble under the bridge, and there it came towards us in the late sun, crouched over the deck, not a single wobble, grinning the way only foxes and my father ever have.

It did not stop. It just lifted one paw as it passed, and I swear it winked.
