Muay thai script and boxing glove on wrist

Lettering · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A black script reading muay thai sits above a red boxing glove with laces, and a thin red and black outlined line trails from the glove's cuff. The script is clean, with smooth black linework, while the glove uses red ink with soft shading to suggest form and light. The tattoo sits on pale skin against a grey panelled background, with the wrist and lower forearm filling the frame.

The glove had hung from a nail above the ring for eleven years before anyone thought to take it down. Tee found it while sweeping the back room of his uncle's gym in Khon Kaen, the leather gone the colour of brick dust, the laces still tied in the double loop Uncle Somsak used before every bout. "Nobody wears that one," said the old cook from next door, who came in each morning for the shade. "Your uncle won his last fight in it and never let anyone else touch it."

Tee tried it on. It was too big, the padding sagging over his knuckles like a wet sock. He sat on an upturned crate by the water barrel and worked at the knot with his teeth until his fingers ached. The lace had frayed to a thread at the cuff, and when he tugged it free a loose end whipped out across the concrete and lay there like a red line someone had drawn with a ruler and then changed their mind about.

He spent the afternoon with a needle and a spool of waxed thread from the sewing stall, stitching the lace back where it had split. Customers came and went. The cook shouted something about rice. Somsak's pads hung in their row, unbothered. By dusk the cuff was whole again, and the trailing lace was a little shorter than it had been, which he decided he could live with.

When Somsak came in that night he stopped in the doorway and looked at the glove on Tee's hand for a long time. Then he held out his own bare fist, knuckles raw, and said nothing. Tee tied the lace the way he had been shown, one loop, one pull, and the knot held.
