Fox with patterned pink tail
Mixed · Flash
A fox sits upright in profile, its long tail curling around its body and filled with dense decorative patterns such as paisley, scrolls and feather-like shapes. The fine black linework is combined with soft pink and orange watercolour washes that fade out at the edges, leaving the design floating on a plain cream background. The composition is centred and self-contained, with the tail forming a rounded silhouette beneath the fox.

The last tram had gone, and rain on Cutter Street had turned the gutters into rivers of pink from the laundrette sign. You noticed the fox before she noticed you, sitting upright on the lid of a wheelie bin with her tail wrapped round her feet like a shawl. Every curl of it was a pattern you half recognised: a paisley from a tea towel, a scroll from the iron gate of the old chapel, a feather from a pigeon's wing, all of it drawn in fine black ink and washed with colour that faded at the edges into the wet air.

"I collect what the city forgets," she said, in the flat, polite voice of someone reading a shopping list. "There's one left. The filigree on the shutters of Hallam's bakery on Vine Row. They're pulling the place down on Monday, and nobody will think to save it." She flicked the tip of her tail, and a loose swirl of pink lifted off it and settled on your sleeve like a damp leaf. "You have to ask for it properly. Nicely. Otherwise it stays where it is."
Vine Row was empty except for a delivery van idling with its hazards blinking. The shutters of Hallam's were painted with a scrolled pattern gone soft with age, and when the fox pressed one claw against the metal, the paint loosened and rose in thin ribbons of orange and rose. They drifted up past the streetlamps and joined the clouds, and her tail grew heavier and fuller, till the last bare patch at its tip was covered in new filigree that shone like wet ink.
By dawn she was sitting on the new hoarding at the end of the street, tail spilling down over the pavement in a rounded cloud of colour. The first smell of bread drifted from the bakery down the road, which was not Hallam's any longer. You picked a small pink feather off the kerb, its edges still soft, and put it in your coat pocket where it stayed warm.
