Free script with a bird on the upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small fine line tattoo of the word free in flowing cursive script, with a tiny solid swallow in flight at the end of the final stroke. The linework is thin and even, in black ink with no shading, and the tattoo sits alone on smooth skin against a soft, blurred background. The grey top's neckline frames the lower edge of the composition.

Every spring the swallows came back to Mardle Junction before the first train, and every spring old Tobias Greave swept the same ledge under the canopy so their mud cups would not be knocked down. He had no use for them, he said, only that they kept the pigeons off the clock.

The year the line was to close, a girl came up the steps with a ticket for a place she had never been, and no money to pay the difference. She asked the porter what the word was for a bird that flew where it liked. He told her swallow. She told him that was not a word, that was a creature, and he could not argue, because she was right.
She sat on the bench until the last train, writing in chalk on the platform beneath the swallows' ledge. The letters were looping and joined, the way a person writes who learned on a slate with a wet finger. When the signalman came out to lock up he read them and went quiet. The word was free, and the stroke after it ran down to a small swallow, drawn with one quick lift of the chalk.
Tobias never learned who she was. By morning the rain had taken the chalk, and the swallows had gone south, and the ledge was bare. He kept sweeping it anyway, out of habit. Now and then he found a single grey feather lying where the girl had sat, and he put each one in his waistcoat pocket and carried them all the way to the sea.
