Script word free with a flying bird on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of the word free in a flowing cursive script, with a silhouetted bird in flight forming the end of the final stroke. The thin, even linework is set against smooth skin, and the blurred warm background and grey top at the neckline keep the focus on the design. The tattoo is in black ink only, sitting in the upper back area.

Her father had written his own letters in a looping copperplate that ran uphill, and the summer before he died he had painted one word in tall white letters on the board above the loft door. Most of the paint had gone now. Only the F and the last E still stood out against the weathered wood.
She sat at the kitchen table and wrote her reply on the back of an invoice. Her pen dragged at the end of every line, the ink thinning where she pressed too hard, and when she reached the final word she let the nib slide off the page and lift away in one long stroke. It came out like a swallow banking over the quay. She looked at it for a long time.
At six she unlatched the hatch and let the birds out one by one. The grey hen went first, circling once above the masts before she turned toward the breakwater and the open water beyond. Nell watched until she was a speck, then folded the letter into her apron pocket and walked down to the quay to post it herself.
