The tarpaulin over my stall had sagged into a bowl by eleven, and every few minutes it tipped a cupful of rain onto the same trestle corner, where I kept the bird things: moulted jay feathers, a glass case of wrens' nests, a box of Ordnance Survey maps nobody wanted. Dolores from the bread van shouted across that I'd be swimming before the lunch crowd came.

The boy stopped in front of me with a carrier bag dripping at the handles. He was about nine, his school jumper pulled over his fists, and he pointed at a grey feather pinned to the card with a drawing pin. I told him feathers were free if he could say where they'd come from. He thought about it hard, the way children do when they suspect a trick. "My nan's budgie got out on Tuesday," he said. "Went up over the bus station and never came down."

I unpinned the feather and gave it to him. He held it against the grey sky as if testing its weight, then tucked it under the bread in his bag and turned to go. At the edge of the awning a gust caught the feather, lifted it clear of the bag and carried it up past the gutters, where three pigeons broke off the cathedral roof and wheeled after it, small and grey against the rain.
