The drifts had reached the second step of the inn by the time Ingrid found the swallow in the stable loft, stiff as a dropped glove. She carried it down in cupped hands, past the kitchen where her mother was measuring coffee into a tin with the care of a woman rationing hope, and set it on the warm ledge above the stove. "It won't last the night," her mother said, without looking up.

The guest who had walked over the pass that morning, a salt-faced man called Anders Lind with a crate of hymn books strapped to his back, crouched beside the stove and watched the bird's chest lift and fall. "My grandmother had a saying for them," he said. "Fri som en fågel. Free as a bird. She said it every time one flew off the fence, as if it were a blessing and a complaint at once." Ingrid thought that sounded like something people only said when they had been stuck somewhere too long.
The storm went on all evening. Near midnight the swallow shifted, then fluttered from the ledge into the room and struck the window glass twice, blindly. Ingrid got up and pulled the shutter back. The cold came in like a held breath let out. For a while the bird clung to the frame, unsure, its blue back dark against the white. Then it dropped, caught the wind off the yard, and was gone over the drifts toward the lights of the far farm.
In the morning the road was still closed and Anders was still at the table, turning his cup in its saucer. Ingrid left the shutter open a hand's width, and the snow lay in a soft line on the sill where the bird had been.
