Script quote running down a bare back
Lettering · Back · Colour · Photo
A close photograph of a bare back with a long line of cursive script tattooed vertically down the spine, set in a muted teal ink with fine, flowing strokes. The lettering is the only design visible, and it is partly overlapped by a sheer, ivory lace garment on the left. The soft, warm lighting and shallow focus give the skin a smooth, natural tone.

I looked at the slate by the lamp room door and your handwriting on it, the line Maman made you copy when you were seven: *dans la main de l'Éternel*. Your round, careful letters, the chalk gone grey from years of wiping.

The boat was the Saint-Yves out of Le Conquet, four men and a dog, and the dog was the first up the ladder. Pierrick Le Goff took my hand at the top and did not let go for some time, which is how I knew he had been afraid. He asked whether the light had been out long. I said only as long as it takes a man to remember his mother.
This morning I did not wipe the slate. I left your line where it stands, and I cleaned the lamp room window with soap until the glass squeaked, then wrote the words on it backwards, so that anyone coming in from the water can read them the right way round. The gulls have already walked across the first two letters.
Come home when the spring tides are kind. The light is mended and the dog has learned the ladder. Your brother, Yann.
