French script quote on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman raises one arm, showing a long handwritten script tattoo in French running along the upper arm. The lettering is in black, with fine, slightly uneven strokes, and the text is set diagonally from the elbow toward the shoulder. The soft, pale bedding and white strap in the background keep the focus on the tattoo.

She refused. Then she didn't. She sharpened a nib, dipped it, and wrote the lines across the meat of his upper arm while the ferry rocked against the pilings, so the letters leaned uphill toward his shoulder the way the water ran. He flinched, he laughed, he swore in Breton. When it was done she told him the ink would spread a little over the years, and he said good, let the words grow into him.
He went to sea that spring and did not come back for three winters. When he did, he stood at her table with his sleeve pushed up and the lines had blurred into soft grey, the last word almost gone. He asked her what it said. She could no longer read it either, and that was the strangest thing. So she recited what she remembered, and he corrected her, and between the two of them they finished the line the way a river finishes a bend. The ferry lamp went out across the water, and neither of them bothered to light another.
