Two colour forearm tattoos: a grey jar labelled Frog's Breath with a green frog and flames on the left, and a jar labelled Deadly Nightshade with a skull in smoke and two butterflies on the right.

Frog's Breath and Deadly Nightshade jars on forearms

Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two forearm tattoos sit side by side. The left shows a grey apothecary-style jar labelled FROG'S BREATH, with a green frog and wisps of flame rising from its top. The right shows a jar labelled DEADLY NIGHTSHADE with a faint skull in smoke above it and a purple and green butterfly and a smaller blue butterfly, with shaded greys and soft colour throughout.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frog had been sulking since Tuesday, and Odile Marsh could not work out why. She tipped the lid of the grey jar an inch and a thread of green steam slid out, smelling of wet pennies and struck matches. Frog's breath, her grandmother had called it, though nobody had ever seen a frog breathe fire. Odile had her doubts about the label too.

Across the shop, on the cracked windowsill, the other jar sat sealed with its skull of smoke. Deadly Nightshade, in curling script, and whoever had painted it had added two butterflies, which was the sort of foolishness her grandmother would have scolded. Nightshade was no pet. It had once put a duke's hounds to sleep for three days, or so the story went, and it had never been properly forgiven for it.

Odile dragged the stool across the boards, climbed up, and lifted the nightshade lid just wide enough for the smoke to drift out. A green-winged butterfly and a smaller blue one spiralled into the rafters. Below her the frog jar gave a small contented puff, and the flame on its lid sank to a blue ember. Her grandmother had kept the two apart for a reason she never explained, but the shop had not burned down yet. Odile decided that counted as a yes.
