The owls have come back to the orchard at Harrowmere, the way you said they would when the blossom went over. Three of them now, sitting in the cherry boughs like clerks waiting for a verdict. Mother has taken to leaving the shutters open so they can see the lamp, and she says it is only fair, since they kept the mice off the grain all winter while the king's men sulked in the tower.

The king has decreed that no owl may be kept within the walls of Ardenvale, which is why I am writing rather than speaking. I have the bolt of blue silk you wanted for the wedding banners. Tell Corin the dye took, though the green came out too yellow, the way his leaves always do. I sent the small pot of rose madder to Mother by the tinker, so she can finish the hem.

Here is the thing I have not told anyone. On the night the bell cracked, I climbed the old beech with the lantern and found a nest with a single chick in it, its face round as a plate. I held it until its mother came back, then I climbed down and swore to nobody that I had seen anything. You will laugh, but I think that is why I did not leave for the coast with the others.

Come home before the frost. Bring the good inks. And if the owls are still on the north wall when you arrive, count them for me, because I have lost track of who is whose.
