Full back and leg Japanese dragon tattoo
Japanese · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman with shoulder-length auburn hair is photographed from behind, showing a large Japanese style tattoo covering her back, upper arms and thighs. A teal and blue dragon winds through dark grey waves and clouds, with orange and red accents, koi-like fish and flower forms on the thighs. The black outlines and shading are bold and smooth, and the figure fills most of the frame against a pale patterned wall.

Dear Ruth,

The Marigold came in on Tuesday with her hold half empty and her skipper in a foul temper, and you will not believe what was tangled in the trawl. Three fathoms down, Davy said, the sea had gone the colour of slate, and then all at once the net went heavy as a drowned cow. We hauled for an hour expecting a wreck. What came over the rail was a single koi, orange and white, as long as my forearm, its scales still bright as the inside of a shell. It lay on the deck gulping and looking at us as if we owed it money.
Nobody wanted to be the one to put it back, but old Hamish said his mother's people had a rule about fish that come up with cloud on them, so Davy knelt by the gunwale and let it go. The water boiled white for a moment. Then the swell lifted under the boat in one long grey back, and I swear I saw something green coil along it, the way the wave curls in the picture Mam pinned above the stove.
Hamish says the fish was only a fish. I think he is lying, because he has not touched his tea since. I have started sleeping with the window open so I can hear the water.
Your loving sister, Nell
