Red phoenix tattoo across back and side
Japanese · Back · Colour · Photo
A large red phoenix with outstretched wings and clawed feet is tattooed across the upper back and down the side of the torso, with long tail feathers trailing below. The linework is fine and detailed, with shading in deeper red on the wing and body feathers. The ink is set against pale skin and a soft, dark, low-key background with white bedding.

The loft caught fire on the night the herring boats came in late, and by the time you reached the quay the sailcloth was already roaring like a sea wall in a gale. Your uncle was shouting for buckets nobody could fill fast enough. Above the smoke, something red unfolded from the rafters, wider than a man's arms, and the whole harbour went quiet to watch it.

It did not fly off over the water as the gulls would have. It circled the burning roof three times, trailing feathers that glowed at their tips and drifted down like sparks, and where they landed the timber smouldered and went out. Your uncle swore it was the rope-walk's ghost come to take its wages. You knew better, because you had seen the bird's claws close around the lamp hook, and you had seen it look down at you with an eye like a banked coal.
When the roof fell in, the bird went with it, or so everyone said at dawn. You walked the blackened quay alone while the tide went out, and found one feather caught in the mooring ring of the old cutter. It was warm and red and weighed nothing at all. You tied it inside your coat, the way your mother once tied charms to the mast, and told nobody what you had seen.
Years later you still feel it there when the wind turns east, a small heat against your ribs. Once a fishwife asked where you got such a bright thing, and you only pointed at the sea, where the last of the sparks were sinking one by one under the black water, each one still burning.
