Traditional · Back · Mixed · Photo

A standing figure is photographed from behind, showing a large back piece of a dark, cat-like creature set among flames, with a dagger, a goblet and a skull beneath. The bold outlines and solid black and grey shading are paired with touches of red and other colour across the flames and surrounding motifs. The arms are covered in further traditional-style designs, and the figure fills most of the frame against a plain pale wall.

The baker at Coldharbour lit her ovens an hour before the church clock, because the bread had never once risen properly for anyone who lit them late. Her name was Maud Fenwick, and she shared the bakehouse with a black cat that was not hers. It was a long, sleek beast with eyes like struck matches, and it had come up the lane one February and settled on the warm bricks as though it had paid rent.

One dawn a boy called Tobias came to take the early work. He carried his dead father's dagger in his belt and laid it on the flour board to cut the twine from the sacks. The cat stood up slowly, put one paw on the blade, and the fire in the oven leapt up the flue in a rush of red and orange. Tobias fell back into the flour. Maud did not look up from her dough.

"Pour it, then," she said.

He found a silver goblet on the sill, filled it from the jug of sour red wine, and set it down near the creature. The cat drank without hurry. When the goblet was empty, the flames settled to a steady glow, and the bread went into the oven with a sigh.

After that, Tobias poured every morning before the clock struck. The loaves came out gold and split along the top, and the cat sat in the warm ash with its eyes half shut while the first cart rattled past the window.
