Traditional sleeve with skull and flowers on forearm
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A raised forearm and elbow show a dense colour tattoo sleeve with a skull near the wrist, dark green leaves and a large dark green flower with a red outline and yellow centre. Lower down, a red poppy-like flower and a panel with a bluish background and a small fiery or rocky motif sit among bold outlines. The arm is photographed against a plain pale wall with soft, even lighting.

The poppies came up along the wall of Hobb's Lane the spring the miller stopped sending his boy to the wood. Nobody in Ashcombe liked the forest edge after dark, and Agnes Fell liked it least, so when she carried the bread up the track on Tuesdays she kept to the ruts and counted her steps aloud.

One Tuesday a skull sat in the middle of the path, polished white, with a green vine threaded through its eye sockets. It did not speak. It only turned towards the trees, so she followed it past the holly and the dead oak where the crows gathered, to a clearing she had never seen. In the middle stood a great dark-leaved flower taller than a man, its petals outlined in red like a warning, its heart the yellow of a dropped coin.
Beneath it was a stone door set into the hill, its carved panel painted blue as deep water, and behind the blue something glowed and cracked like a forge banked for the night. A voice from inside asked for the bread. Agnes said it was for her mother, who had gone quiet and grey since the miller's wife died. The voice said the village owed the wood a debt, and the wood had grown tired of waiting.
She did not argue. She knelt, broke the loaf in two, and laid one half on the skull's brow. Something was given back: a red poppy pressed into her palm, warm as a coal, that smelled of smoke and rain. By morning her mother was sitting up and asking for the kettle, and the poppies along Hobb's Lane had opened all at once, every one of them facing the hill.
