Full sleeve of a boatman, waves and red octopus
Japanese · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The sleeve shows a figure in a small boat, working an oar, set among rolling blue and white waves with a pale sky above. A large red octopus with pale suckers and curling tentacles fills the lower forearm and elbow area. The linework is bold with smooth shading, and the palette is mainly blues, reds and warm oranges across three photographs taken from different angles.

Dear Tom, the Octopus came off the lorry at Skegness with two arms snapped at the joints, and Dad stood in the wet car park swearing at it as if it had done it on purpose. We had it bolted back together with a borrowed spanner and three days of bad weather. I'm writing from the caravan with the stove ticking, because the wind keeps working at the canvas and I can't sleep.

The little rowing boat is my job now. Dad says a girl with steady hands can keep a boat level on a painted sea, so every afternoon I stand on the platform and pull the oar through rolling blue cloth that a motor shakes underneath. The kids point up at the red beast swinging overhead, its pale suckers blinking in the bulbs, and nobody asks why the boatman looks so serious.
Last night a lad from the waltzers tried to climb the rail to reach the big painted eye that lights up at the top of the arm. I hauled him down by his collar. He said he only wanted to see if it was real. I told him nothing out here is real after dark, except the tide, and the tide is what Dad watches.
We pack up for Hull on Sunday. Come and see the boat before we go, and bring the good oars from the shed. The sea's been cold this week, and I'd rather not row the whole way out alone. Your sister, Nell.
