Funny lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the word Funny tattooed in black capital letters on the pale skin of a forearm, with the letters set at a slight angle. The linework is solid and fairly uniform, with simple flat black ink and no shading. The dark blue sweater sleeve fills the right side and background, so the tattoo stands out against the lighter skin.

Dennis had painted OUT OF ORDER on the lift doors of Harrowgate House eleven times before the council stopped paying him for the sign and started paying him to stop. The lift had been broken since March. Every Tuesday a resident taped a fresh complaint to the brushed steel, and every Tuesday Dennis climbed nine floors with his tin of enamel and his stencil set, and every Tuesday the letters came out a little too cheerful for the mood of the building.

On the twelfth visit Mrs Ferrier from the fourteenth floor stood in the corridor with her arms folded over her cardigan. She ran the residents' newsletter and had decided the building needed a laugh more than it needed another warning. "Something that makes them smile, Dennis. They're fed up enough as it is." He said he could do that. He had no idea how.
He pinned the stencil, the stencil slipped, and he was too tired to start again. So he painted the letters as they came, F, U, N, N, Y, each one tipped at its own small angle like a row of drunk men leaving a pub. He signed nothing. The boy from flat six photographed it on his phone before the paint was dry, and by the weekend the pensioners on the ground floor were arguing whether it was a rebuke to the council or a joke at Dennis's expense.
The lift was finally fixed in October, and the men from the contractor scraped the enamel off in an afternoon. Nobody asked them to. The residents had already started taking the stairs, and on the wall beside the fire door somebody had drawn a small arrow pointing down, in marker, just where the sign used to lean.
