Galaxy-filled bat symbol on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A bat symbol with a black outline sits on the forearm, filled with a nebula-style galaxy of blue, purple, pink and orange, scattered with white star points. The shading is smooth and blended inside the outline, with a bold black border around the edge. The photo is taken from above at an angle against a wooden floor, with the bat symbol filling most of the frame.

Now sit down, you lot, and mind the gull on the step. Nobody in Porthaven will tell you about the winter of the black water, because they were all out on it, and the ones who came back don't like to say how. I'll tell you what I saw from the chandlery window, and you can make of it what you like.

Mrs Hosking's grandson had a painter's box and a head full of comic books, and he'd come down to the slipway every evening with his tin of colours, daubing the sea wall. The fishermen laughed at him. Then the fog came in on the night the Mary Lowen was still out past the Gannet Rocks, and no lamp showed through it, not even the light at the end of the breakwater, which had gone dark on its own.
Young Tobias went up onto the headland, where the wind could cut a man in half, and he painted a bat on the flat stone with paint he had mixed from a jar of blue ink, a tin of violet, a splash of rust-red from the nets, and a handful of chalk that glittered. He drew the wings wide and black at the edges, and filled them with a sky he had never seen, all swirling clouds and pinpoint stars. The old men said it was foolishness. Then the fog lifted a fraction, and the Mary Lowen's skipper saw the shape hanging over the headland, lit from inside like something alive, and he steered by it all the way home.
Here is the thing I never understood. The paint is still there. Walk up the headland at night and you'll see it, faint as breath. And if you're lost, the skipper's grandchildren say, look up, and the stars inside the wings will tell you which way is in.
