Cat silhouette with moon on thigh

Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cat outline sits in profile on the outer thigh, its body filled with a pink and purple starry sky that fades to blue at the base. A yellow moon sits in the cat's torso, with a black cat silhouette sitting in bare tree branches in front of it. The black outlines are clean, and the soft shading gives the colour a watercolour-like blend.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mam said the cat had come up Blackhill Row in the back end of the strike, all ribs and nerve, and had chosen the Dawsons' coal-house as its own. Nobody claimed it. Tomasz fed it the crust from his piece tin at the gate, and because the lamps on the winding house caught its eyes like two dropped pennies, he named it Penny.

By October it had taken to the spoil heap behind the baths, where a lone sycamore stood with its branches gone bare as wire. Penny would climb the slope at dusk and sit in the crook of the tree, looking out over the rooftops towards the pit head. Tomasz hated that tree. His dad had gone down on the back shift, and the cage had been slow coming up the night the roof came in at number four.

He went up the heap in his stockinged feet, carrying the crust, and found Penny waiting on the lowest bough with the moon sitting full behind her, pale yellow as a sovereign. Above it the sky had gone the colour of a bruise, then the colour of a gas flame, and the stars were scattering through it like spilt sugar. Tomasz sat down in the wet grass. He did not hear the cage bell until the cat turned her head towards it, and when he looked up her shape was black against the moon, her tail curled over the whole valley, and the town below looked small enough to hold in one paw. His dad came up the lane with his lamp swinging and his cap in his hand. Tomasz ran.
