Galaxy silhouette with two figures on a forearm

Realism · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A dark animal silhouette on the forearm is filled with a bright nebula of teal, violet, pink and red, with small white stars scattered across it. Below, two grey-shaded figures sit side by side on a ledge seen from behind, above a dark planet with a galaxy texture. Smooth blended shading and vivid colour sit above a line of script reading "though she be bu..." across the upper arm.

Nell had long since stopped asking why Mr Pryce climbed the ridge every clear night with a flask in one pocket and the old brass telescope tucked under his arm. He liked to sit with his granddaughter Ruby at one end and let the dog take the middle, which Nell considered only fair. Ruby was eight and had opinions about everything, the constellations most of all. 'That one's a bear,' she said, and Mr Pryce said it was a hen, and they argued until the cold got into their knuckles. Nell lay across both their feet and listened, because a dog can hear the shape of a sentence even when she cannot follow the words.

Ruby moved away in the spring, to a flat in a city where the sky was the colour of weak tea. Mr Pryce kept climbing anyway. He said the stars did not mind who sat on the bench, only that someone looked up. One night in October he sat alone with the flask untouched, and Nell pushed her head under his hand until he laughed and began naming the stars for her, every one of them, the hen included.

When the ridge was dark again, Nell trotted down ahead of him with her tail up, leaving him to follow at his own pace. Above them the sky spread out wide and spilled with light, and somewhere far off a small girl was looking up at the same hen.
