Owl in an ornate frame on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A grey owl with a large dark eye sits inside an ornate scrollwork frame, with dark drips falling from its lower edge. The owl is rendered in grey shading, while the background behind it is a soft blue and green wash. The tattoo is photographed close up on skin, centred in the frame with the frame filling most of the image.

The clockmaker's widow kept the owl in the back room, behind the glass case where the pocket watches lay open like small dead moons. Every night at the hour the gas lamps guttered on Haddow Street, it turned its head to face the window and blinked once, slow as a shutter. Nobody in the parish would sit with it after dark, so Mercy Teale took the job for the price of a winter coat.

She found the ink on the third night, a thin black tear running from the owl's eye down the frame, as though the oval of painted sea behind it had been weeping. Mercy wiped at it with her sleeve and it came away wet and smelling of iron. She did not tell the widow. The widow had counted the watches twice that week and always came up one short.
On the last night the owl dropped from its perch and landed by her boot, feathers grey as ash, and it spoke in the widow's own dry voice: the missing watch is in your coat pocket, Mercy, where you put it to keep the frame from drinking the sea. She reached in. The brass was warm. When she looked up, the owl was back on its perch inside the oval, and the blue behind it had swallowed the whole room, the lamps, the cases, and her own pale reflection in the glass.
