Cheshire Cat and Jack and Sally on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A large colour tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, with the Cheshire Cat's wide grin and blue eyes dominating the top of the design. Below, Jack Skellington and Sally sit against a swirling night sky with a bright moon and clouds. Blues, purples and greens are blended with soft shading, and the artwork wraps around the arm.

Diary, Thursday. The Pavilion at Saltmarsh has hired me to repaint the back cloth before the Hallowe'en dance, and Mr Oakes wants the moon big enough to show from the balcony. I've given it a cold blue belly and purple bruising at the edges, the way the sky looks over the marsh after rain. Then I painted the cat. Nobody asked for the cat. It came out of the brush the way cats do, all grin and no body, sitting up in the top corner with its eyes lit green like a lamp left on.

Friday. The dance went ahead. Two of the Fenwick girls came as a stitched-up skeleton and his rag-doll sweetheart, and they waltzed under the cloth as if they'd been cut from the same bolt of dusk. Between numbers the band packed up and I stayed by the rail, watching the painted pair sit on their crescent of cloud. The grin in the corner seemed to be watching them too, or watching the room, which is what a grin does when it has nothing to do but wait.
Saturday. Mr Oakes wants the cat painted out. I told him paint doesn't come off a cloth once it has taken, and that I'd tried turpentine on Thursday night and the grin only went a shade bluer. He said the Fenwick girls complained they couldn't sleep for the staring. I didn't tell him the sisters hadn't looked up at it once all evening.
Sunday. Went back to the hall with a bucket and a rag to do it myself. The moon had gone pale. The cat was still there, smiling a little wider than I remembered, and beneath it the skeleton had his arm around the rag doll. Both of them were turned, very politely, toward the door, as though somebody had just come in and they were waiting to be asked to dance.
